Cable sizing to IEC 60364.

Size a low-voltage copper cable for one circuit: current-carrying capacity with the ambient and grouping factors, voltage drop, and the adiabatic short-circuit check. The numbers come from the same engine as the Electrical Design Bench of the ASH Engineering Design Suite and ASH ELDAS, on the IEC 60364 basis, with copper XLPE 90 °C multicore cable ratings from the bench's reference table.

Everything is computed in your browser as you type. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

Load given as
Phases
Line to line for 3-phase (400 V), line to neutral for 1-phase (230 V).
Reference methods of IEC 60364-5-52 Table B.52.1.
Bunched circuits, IEC 60364-5-52 Table B.52.17, as held by the bench.
Leave blank to skip the adiabatic check.
Sets k of the adiabatic check only; the current ratings stay XLPE 90 °C.

Result

Current ratings are the bench's conservative reference values; they are not verifiable from the documents held — check against IEC 60364-5-52 Table B.52 before use.

The bench adds derating by cable grouping tables, protective device selection and discrimination, short circuit to IEC 60909, schedules and reports.

Basis

  • Ib ≤ In ≤ Iz, IEC 60364-4-43 433.1. In is the next standard device rating at or above Ib.
  • Iz = tabulated rating × ambient factor × grouping factor × parallel runs. Ratings: IEC 60364-5-52 Tables B.52.5 and B.52.12; ambient: IEC 60364-5-52 B.52.14 (ground: B.52.15); grouping: IEC 60364-5-52 Table B.52.17.
  • Voltage drop per IEC 60364-5-52 Annex G: ΔU = b · Ib · L · (R cos φ + X sin φ) / n, b = √3 for 3-phase and 2 for 1-phase. The limit is yours; Table G.52.1 (informative) gives 3 % for lighting supplied from a public LV network.
  • Adiabatic check S ≥ I√t / k, IEC 60364-4-43 434.5.2, with k from Table 43A (copper: 143 XLPE, 115 PVC).
  • Engineering defaults: R from IEC 60228 class 2 at 20 °C raised to 90 °C (α = 0.00393 /K), reactance 0.075 to 0.1 mΩ/m by size at 50 Hz, smallest size 1.5 mm², device ratings from the bench's standard list.
  • Results are an aid to a qualified engineer and are to be checked by the responsible engineer.
