Opening files and working with tabs
Open a PDF
- Choose File ▸ Open… or press Ctrl+O. In the app: Help ▸ Show me
- Select one or more PDF files and click Open. Each file opens in its own tab.
Other ways to open:
- Drag and drop: drop PDF files on the start screen or on the tab bar to open them as new tabs. Only PDF files can be opened.
- File ▸ Recent files… reopens a file you used recently.
- File ▸ New window (Ctrl+N) opens an empty window; File ▸ Open in new window… opens a file in a new window.
Tip
Dropping a PDF on the pages of an open document inserts its pages there instead. A line shows where they go and the hint reads “Insert at page N · drop on the tab bar to open”.
Switch between tabs
- Click a tab, or press Ctrl+Tab (next) and Ctrl+Shift+Tab (previous).
- With a tab focused, ← and → move to the neighbouring tab.
Reorder tabs
Drag a tab sideways and drop it in its new place (Esc cancels), or press Ctrl+Shift+Page Up / Page Down to move the current tab left or right.
Close tabs
- Click the × on the tab, press Ctrl+W, or choose File ▸ Close tab.
- Middle-click a tab, or press Delete while the tab has focus.
- Right-click a tab for Close, Close other tabs, Close tabs to the left, Close tabs to the right and Close all tabs.
If a document has unsaved changes you are asked whether to save it, discard the changes or cancel. When you close several tabs at once, Cancel stops the rest from closing.
Copy pages between documents
Drag page thumbnails from the sidebar onto another tab. Hold them over the tab for a moment to switch to it, then drop them on its pages to insert copies there (“Insert copies at page N”), or drop them on the tab itself to add them at the end (“Append N pages to …”).
Encrypted files
An encrypted PDF opens read-only. A banner says This document is encrypted: viewing and printing only (editing is not supported). and the status bar shows Encrypted · read-only. Dropped files open in a new tab instead of being inserted.
